How to Beat Stress, Anxiety and Overwhelm with EFT Tapping

"You can't calm the storm, so stop trying. What you can do is calm yourself. The storm will pass." - Timber Hawkeye

Emotional overwhelm isn't merely an emotional state, it has a profound impact on your body and daily life. It’s an experience that can leaves us feeling lost and struggling to know what to do or how to cope.

Recognising the signs of overwhelm and implementing effective coping strategies is crucial for maintaining mental and physical well-being. Remember that seeking professional help when necessary is a sign of strength, not weakness.

In an overwhelming world, acknowledging and accepting our emotions is the first courageous step towards managing and actually overcoming them, bringing you one step closer towards a balanced and fulfilling life.

“Within the chaos lies an opportunity for growth and resilience.”

What Causes Overwhelm?

Before we find out how to beat stress, anxiety and overwhelm, let's understand what causes overwhelm in the first place. Overwhelm can be triggered by a myriad of situations - from personal challenges and significant life changes to unexpected circumstances or even an accumulation of daily stressors:

1. Work Pressure: Heavy workloads, hectic schedules, tight deadlines, and high expectations can lead to stress and overwhelm at work.

2. Personal Life Challenges: Relationship issues, financial difficulties, and personal crises, can give rise to emotional overwhelm, be it for a short period of time or over a more extended period.

3. Health Concerns: Coping with weight gain or physical or mental health issues can be an exhausting battle, and this struggle can significantly contribute to a feeling of being overwhelmed.

4. Uncertainty or Feeling unsure: It is said that we are living in one of the most uncertain times in history, whether that is true or not, the unpredictability of what lies in the future,  can cause stress, anxiety, and overwhelm, making it challenging to find our footing.

5. Juggling competing priorities: As working women, balancing the demands of career, family, and personal well-being can all lead to overwhelm and chaos (have you counted the number of things on your to-do list lately?!?).

It’s important to recognise the main reasons behind stress, anxiety and overwhelm as identifying the triggers will enable you to develop strategies and coping mechanisms to navigate the complexities of life with resilience.

How Emotional Overwhelm Impacts You, Your Body and Your Life?

Emotional overwhelm can impact your mental state as well as your behaviour, thinking ability, and physical health. Symptoms of emotional overwhelm can vary and may include any of the following:

Physical Symptoms:

·       Rapid heartbeat

·       Difficulty breathing

·       Dizziness

·       Fatigue

·       Headaches

·       Cramps

·       Digestive issues

·       Sleep disturbance/ insomnia

·       Aches, pains, and tense muscles

·       Loss of sexual desire

Impact On Your Mind and Ability to Think:

Feeling overwhelmed can be like drowning in a sea of emotions. It can make you feel anxious and depressed, constantly worried and sad. When this happens, even small decisions can feel impossible to make. It's like being stuck at a crossroads, not knowing which path to take.

This heavy emotional load can make it challenging for you to concentrate and stay focused, affecting your productivity. You may start believing that you can’t handle things or aren’t in control of your emotions, resulting in low self-esteem and confidence.

The feeling of overwhelm not only affects your mind but also impacts the way you interact with others. You may want to avoid social interactions, leading to feeling socially isolated.

Even little things can make you irritable, straining relationships.

Eventually, it could even steal away the simple joy of life, making everything seem dull and tiring.

Are You Ready to Tap Your Way Out of Overwhelm?

If you've been struggling with stress, anxiety, or overwhelm, EFT tapping could be the solution you've been looking for. It's a simple, drug-free technique that you can learn and practice on your own, providing a sense of empowerment in managing your emotions.

Here's a quick guide on the main tapping points, what to do before and after you tap:

Before you tap…

·       Find a quiet place where you can express yourself freely.

·       Think of a specific situation or memory that is bothering you.

·       Be as specific as possible and only work on one thing at a time.

·       Become aware of the emotion you are feeling (fear, anger, sadness, guilt, shame, etc.)

·       Rate the intensity of the emotion 0-10 (with 10 being the most intense) as you feel if now.

·       Identify where you feel that in your body (if applicable).

After Tapping…

·       Take a sip of water or a breath.

·       Focus on the situation again and re-evaluate the intensity of the emotion (0-10). Repeat the tapping until the intensity is 2 or below and ideally 0.

·       You may need to do several rounds with a variety of emotions as these shifts.
